EOTO& Trail 4-The Term Affirmative Action

The term Affirmative Action means a policy aimed at increasing workplace and educational opportunities for people who are underrepresented in various areas of our society. This term came to use in 1965 by President Johnson who issued the Executive Order 11246. This helped ensure the employment and education of everyone no matter race, religion, sex, gender and national origin. 

This movement caused a split in American society between the people who do support this and people who believed it did not benefit society. The main split of this was between republicans and democrats in the 1960s and 70s. The only issue this caused was that there were under qualified people working in high paying jobs and can slow down the process from the lack of proper education. Another con that people pointed out were the costs to apply these policies because of how you have to pay and budget for more employees. 

However, the pros of combining races and ethnic backgrounds into the workplace is increased productivity, more opportunity and representation. These factors are important for building a diverse country and help create opportunities for the people who have historically underrepresented in this country. Most of these groups of people are those who are minorities, women and poorer citizens.

The support given to these people by the government comes in the form of scholarships, grants and other financial gain so they may have the same opportunities for education and employment as every race, sex or background. These benefits are helping not only increase the graduation rates among minorities, but also can ensure employment after college can increase with the proper education and funding. 

Overall, The term affirmative action has had a huge impact on many people's lives. The amount of opportunities given to people whose parents or grandparents did not have has increased. In conclusion, the growing population of employed minorities has caused many benefits for America and the economy as a whole. Thank you.
