Driving Miss Daisy- Reflection

During class, we watched a movie entitled Driving Miss Daisy. This movie was a sweet tale of a black man who insists on helping an older white women after the death of her husband. This man, Hoke, is a kind man who knows Miss Daisy's son, Boolie, and got hired by her son to drive her. At first, Miss Daisy was stubborn, and wouldn't let this man drive her. It wasn't until he insisted by driving right next to her as she was walking to the store Piggly Wiggly.

This movie was overall a wonderful demonstration of how the African Americans have grown to accept their role in society as servers for the white people. Hoke was more than happy to drive and help out Miss Daisy and soon becomes a good friend of hers. This goes to show how the close work between two different races ultimately caused friendships; because proximity is a huge factor in human relationships. Therefore, this movie is proving how America is starting to move towards equal rights because the relationships between black slaves and the slaveowners are improving due to proximity.

The lessons we can learn in this movie is how the African Americans who understand their role in society are highly regarded in the white society because they seem less intimidating and nonviolent. This is why Miss Daisy did not completely write off Hoke, and did end up trusting him and made a connection with him. This not only benefitted Hoke, as he was earning money, but also the white family because Miss Daisy had company and was no longer depressed. However, the beginning of this relationship was rocky because Miss daisy had not yet completely trusted Hoke, as he was a black man, and would accuse him of stealing food and her son had to come to her house to calm her down.

Overall, This movie was a really great representation of how the relationships between the two races positively impacted America. The close work between the two caused friendships to grow because of how proximity affects human relationships. The kindness of Hoke to be Miss Daisy's driver just goes to show that some of the Black people in this society understand their roles in society and understand the only way for them to get a job and make money is to make their services irresistible to the white folk. Therefore, this movie shows the thought process between both Black and White citizens and it truly is a beautiful story.
