EOTO & Trial 2- Reaction

 Pro Reconstruction era:

  • Brad: Freedmen's bureau was an act that was set to help reconstruct the relationships between black families and it was mostly successful. Did get turned into a whole thing with Lincoln and then he died and the new president was not interested in keeping around for more years. The congress ended up agreeing with them until many years later when they decided to continue the Freedmen's bureau.

  • Kayla: College degrees were unallowed for black citizens until they had the opportunity to attempt to earn the degrees. Cheyenne University was the first college to allow enrollment to black citizens and provided education for employment for African Americans.

  • Josh: The 13th Amendment was passed in 1865 and officially disbanded slavery in the United States and was passed by president Lincoln. This had not yet made all citizens equal, but had helped take a large step towards getting the 14th Amendment passed.

  • Grace Ann: The 14th Amendment was passed in 1868 and allowed citizenships to all born in the United States, even if previously enslaved. Southern states would have been punished if they did not allow African Americans to vote. This Amendment also gave the federal government the power to punish all states that do not abide by the 24th Amendment.

  • Max: The 15th Amendment gave African Americans the right to vote. This meant that everyone had the right to vote no matter their race which was a huge step in equality fights. This of course was not the end of the fight for equal rights between not only race, but sex.

  • Gabbie: Hiram Rhodes was the first black man in congress in 1870. This was a huge step in the quality fight because they had a black congress member who could help the African Americans fight for their rights and could intimidate the white people who tried to protest their rights.
